My brother in-laws have been raving fans of the Yeti coolers for years. “The ice lasts for days, it’s the best cooler we have ever owned” they say!
My wife and I finally bought the Tundra 65 litre and are road testing it so you can make the right decision and save money.
Currently the Yeti Cooler is packed with 3 bags of ice, keeping 12 beers chilled.
Ice is still intact with minimal melting taking place and everything is ice cold to the bone.
After my current test at my home the ice lasted 4 days! Day temperatures were 25-30 degrees celsius and cooler was only opened twice daily after New years night. Not bad!

Yeti Cooler Best Practices (Make Ice Last Longer!)
In making your ice last longer in the Yeti Cooler there are some golden rules to follow.
Variables that affect insulation and ice retention in a cooler include:
- Ice quality
- Ice quantity
- Pre-chill cooler & contents
- Outside environment
- Human involvement
- Contents
Ice Quality
Using top quality ice that is smaller, and cubed shaped will cool contents more quickly, while block ice melts at a slower rate.
Most people in the know use a mix of both to keep contents cold and achieve a longer ice retention.
Ice Quantity
The amount of ice you put into a Yeti cooler is important. I know that in the past I would always put the bare minimum into a cooler which is a huge mistake.
Yeti recommends using the following formulae:
- ⅔ ice, ⅓ contents ratio.
Make sure that one-third of your cooler holds your cold drinks and food, while the other two-thirds should be filled with ice.
Pre-Chill Cooler & Contents
It is recommended to place a bag of ice in cooler before use to make the inside cold and ready for ice. If you don’t like wasting ice just place frozen meat, frozen water bottles into cooler for an hour or so to pre-chill.
Then once cold add quality ice and cold contents for best results!
Outside Environment
The outside temperature plays a massive role in ice retention. Always keep your Yeti cooler in a shady area out of direct sunlight.

My Final Opinion on Yeti Coolers
After testing the Yeti Cooler for my honest Yeti Coolers Reviews article I have come to these opinions.
I left ice in cooler for 4 days and it has slowly melted each day but still remains intact. Well there is 1 quarter of a bag left to keep items cool.
This proves that the extreme insulation power and durability are excellent and Yeti fullfills their promise. The testing conditions ranged from 20 degrees at night and 30 degrees during the day.
The hard coolers are perfect for outdoor entertaining and boating due to the durability and the tie points. They can be stood on, sat on without a worry in the world.
Handles are strong, latches look durable and it doesn’t slide around like other coolers due the bottom grip.
Yeti Coolers are easy to carry but the larger ones like 65Litre and above need 2 people to carry and plenty of space in the car.
They look stylish and neat, the colours they come in are nice. The only negative part is probably the price tag, because they are more expensive than most other coolers on the market but maybe they are worth it!
I would just get one if I was you because you only live once and you deserve quality. Compared with my last cooler this one kicks it but on so many levels.
