Outside Fire Pit Back Story (Solo Stove Reviews)
Our back story on outside fire pits begins in 2019 when we made a homemade keg fire pit. A mate of ours happened to have a large Tooheys keg that we could convert into an outside fire pit, so we did.
We cut off the top, grinded triangle and circle holes around the sides for air flow and boom we had out very own best fire pit in Australia.
The only problem with this homemade invention was it produced a ton of smoke (not the best smokeless fire pit) and burns like a jet engine on full thrust! So wood would disappear in minutes which costs money these days.
Until the day came we purchased the Famous Solo Stove Bonefire. I was a little skeptical at first about the claims of it being the best smokeless fire pits in the world, but we grabbed one anyway.

Are Solo Stove Worth It?
We were skeptical before lighting it up for the first time, but once wood was in and lit we were amazed how the 360 degrees airflow worked.
The flames work in slow motion and hipnotize. Compared with our homemade outside fire pit that sends a flame sky high and burns really in-consistantly.
Solo Stove firepits look really nice in your outdoor area and add some class which will increase your status level amoungst friends.
So to answer the question are Solo Stoves worth it? Yes!
What Makes a Solo Stove So Good?
In our opinion what makes the Solo Stove so good is the Patent 360 degree airflow system.
This unique 360 degrees Airflow works like this:
- Air is pulled through the lower burn holes and trapped in the burn chamber. The movement fans the flames from below, causing the fire to increase in temperature.
- Then the flame gets hot enough to heat the fire pit’s double walls and the gap between them.
- Once the walls are heated, they cause incoming air flowing in-between to rise to the top instead of sinking to the burn chamber.
- The hotter the walls get, the hotter and less dense the air is.
- Once the air is superheated, it shoots out of the upper burn holes and initiates Secondary Burn.

My Final Opinion of Solo Stove
It’s pretty amazing and makes my new outdoor area look beautiful. The flame burns so slowly and makes your wood last longer.
I can easily take it apart and clean out the ash without much mess. The base plate is awesome, absolutly no heat on the bottom base which is great.
The smokeless fire pit was on the more expensive side but totally worth every penny.
Trust me, if you love outside fires then the Solo Stove firepits are for you.
Common Solo Stove Questions The Public Have!
What kind of fuel do solo stoves use?
Wood of course! It is recommended to use timber only, avoid petrol and other chemicals because this could destroy the fire pit. (burning hardwoods, such as oak or maple)
Can I burn my Solo Stove on a wood deck?
Yes you can with the stand but I would recommend to have your fire in a safer place away from flammable materials. Sparks and embers can escape so be careful.
So it is recommended to place a stone or brick pavers underneath.
What not to do with Solo Stove?
Pouring water into the Solo Stove while it’s hot can cause damage so try to let the fire go out naturally.
Will water ruin a Solo Stove?
Our stove sits outside most of the time and is still in great condition but it is not recommended to put out your fire with water because it could damage firepit.
Do solo stoves get hot underneath?
Not very hot, our firepit is basically air temperature.
Do solo stoves rust out?
I haven’t had mine long enough to tell you, but being made of stainless steel they should last. Taking care of your Solo Stove will prevent the rust over the long term.
Do you have to clean Solo Stove after every use?
We don’t due to laziness, but I try to empty the ash on a regular basis.
Apart from that you don’t need to clean it every day.
Does Solo Stove smell like a campfire?
Yes! It is just like a fire pit but without the smoke in your eyes.
What if it rains on my Solo Stove?
Nothing it gets wet, so don’t get to concerned. If your worried just put undercover.
Can you put lid on Solo Stove while burning?
No, only place lid on stove when completly cooled down.
Is it OK to leave Solo Stove unattended?
Never leave your firepit un-attended because hot embers and sparks could escape and cause a fire.
How does Solo Stove not smoke?
Solo Stove uses 360 Degree Airflow technology that uses warm and cool air that circulates in the chamber walls to prevent smoke from escaping the firepit.
Smart hey!
Can you burn paper in a Solo Stove?
I burn paper in my Solo Stove to start, it works well and gets it going fast.
